June 1, 2023

5th Avenue South is seen by many locals as the heart of Naples! However, what makes 5th Avenue so special? Here’s a guide to why this street is one of Naples’ most beloved and how you can enjoy it to the fullest:

History

Naples’ 5th Avenue South has a long history as Naples’ “main street.” Since the 1920s, this iconic avenue has acted as a hub for events and activities. The train depot opened on 5th Avenue South in 1927, making the area a logical meet-up point for those in the city.

As the years passed by, the popularity of the area continued to grow.  In fact, in 1948, 5th Avenue South became the home of the city’s first traffic light!

However, the 5th Avenue South locals and tourists alike have grown to love is largely a product of urban planning in the 1990s. In the early 90s, the city hired renowned urban planner Andres Duany to transform the avenue into a premiere shopping, dining, and cultural events destination. Today, Duany’s vision is alive and well — with a bustling 5th Avenue South for all to enjoy!

Events

Many of Naples’ most well-loved events are found on 5th Avenue South. These include holiday events (like the 4th of July parade), monthly events (like Evening on Fifth), and highly anticipated yearly events (like Cars on 5th). You can browse all upcoming events on the 5th Avenue South events calendar.

Shopping

From local boutiques to distinct art galleries and unique fashion finds, there is a shopping experience for everyone on 5th Avenue South. Both locals and tourists alike find themselves on 5th Avenue South when they are looking for swimsuits, jewelry, home decor, and more. Not to mention, you’ll discover some of Naples’ best spas on this street. What a fun and relaxing way to end a long day of shopping!

Dining

The area’s restaurants boast everything from world-class seafood at fine dining restaurants to juicy burgers at casual eateries.
